The names of the prophet Muhammad’s family are commonly used as Muslim names: his wife, Aisha; his daughter Fatima; his son Ali, and grandson Hussain. His immediate successors as governors of Mecca (caliphs) were Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and then his grandson Ali.

The Islamic philosopher Avicenna (Ibn Sina: 980-1037 CE) played a crucial role in reintroducing Aristotle into Western thought. The boxer Cassius Clay, three times World Heavyweight Boxing chapion, revealed his membership of the “Nation of Islam” movement in 1964, taking as a new name Muhammad Ali. The English pop singer-songwriter Cat Stevens converted to Islam in 1977, a year later adopting the name Yusuf Islam. Benazir Bhutto became the first woman to be head of Government in a Muslim country, leading Pakistan 1988-1990 and 1993-1996. Megawati Sukarnoputri has been President of Indonesia since 2001.
